HOW TO STAY MOTIVATED

If you are going to improve your health and fitness, there are many ways to stay motivated.

There is the fear approach;
poor diet and lack of physical activity together account for over 300,000 deaths among adults in the United States each year.  Making it the second highest cause of death it the U.S.   Poor diet and physical inactivity is a leading cause of heart disease, cancer, and stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure, and osteoporosis.  Poor diet and physical inactivity can reduce your life expectancy by as much as 20 years.  For some reason however this approach does not seem to always work.

There is the feel good approach;
good nutrition and regular physical activity will improve the longevity and quality of life.   It will increase their strength, flexibility, balance and stamina.  It will enhance their skin tone, libido, memory and sports performance as well as reduce their body fat and chance of illness.  But for some reason this does not always work either.

Here is a new approach that may work for some:
Rather than focus on you, focus on your children.  Did you know that obesity has doubled in young children and tripled in adolescents over the past 20 years?  Did you know people who are overweight in their younger years dramatically increase their chances of having a poor quality of life in their adulthood and dyeing prematurely?  Did you know that children are now being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (known as onset of adult diabetes)?

Kids who are active and eat well are happier and have less stress.  They learn and concentrate better.  They have less illnesses and heal from injuries quicker.  Kids who are active and eat well excel at their favorite sports.  Given this type of information regarding your children, it stands to reason that teaching by example and encouraging them to adopt an active and nutritionally sound life style would be as important as; Going to school, church or learning proper manners and social skills.  So… remember this the next time that you “don’t have time” to workout or you “don’t have time” to pick a better place to eat rather than fast food or you “have to” buy candy and ice cream for the household.  Remember you are teaching your children this is how it is done.   If you are not willing to do it for yourself, do it for your kids.

You now have a whole year ahead of you to make healthy life style changes which will benefit you and your family for the rest of your lives.  Try some of these tips; keep healthy snacks in the car.  Make breakfast an absolute for everyone every time.   Take family walks in the evening and on the weekends.   Kick the kids off the PS2 sorry PS3 and send them outside to play, even if they don’t want to.  Start right now!  What are you waiting for?
