The holiday season is upon us again and so are all the gatherings, parties and tempting edibles. Although the holiday season is a time for celebration and joy it is certainly not without its fair share of stress. Scheduling and organizing, shopping and spending, entertaining and accommodating are just a few of the stresses we all experience during the season.
The one stressor I did not mention however seems to be increasing in popularity year after year, “Food”. This year will be no exception. Thousands of magazines, newspapers,T.V shows and internet sites will bombard their subscribers with “Great tasting low calorie, low fat and/or low carbohydrate meal ideas”. From Oprah to www.whatever, if it can
be ingested you can bet we will hear about it.
Don’t get me wrong, food has always been a major component of the holidays; In fact in the “good old days” food was a very welcomed and an exciting part of any holiday event. It has only been in the past 10 years or so that so much stress has been associated with holiday food.
So why has holiday food gotten such a bad rap over the years? Well, primarily because of our ever increasing obsession with calories and macro nutrients (fats, carbohydrates and proteins). Our concerns are certainly understandable what with diseases and heath conditions like Diabetes and obesity plaguing our society today. But are we going about it the right way? Do we really need to add any more stress to what is suppose to be a joyous and celebratory time? Do we really need to alter, degrade or discard grandma’s favorite recipes? No! , No! and most of all; No! we should never have to alter, degrade or discard grandma’s recipes. The truth is we all should be ashamed of ourselves for even suggesting such things and here’s why.
